In this "Lift Every Voice" event co-presented by the Southern University of New Orleans Library and the New Orleans Mayor's Office of Cultural Economy, New Orleans poet, scholar, and activist Kalamu Ya Salaam talks to Southern University of New Orleans librarian Erika Witt about African American literature, New Orleans griot Tom Dent, and his own extensive contributions to the city's culture. Salaam recently edited I Am New Orleans (University of New Orleans Press, 2020), an anthology of contemporary poets' responses to the work of Louisiana poet Marcus Christian (1900–1976).
